    A Little History...

    • 2003 - 2012
      The Spain Years
    • 2012 - 2018
      The UK Years

    2003 - 2012
    The Spain Years

    1. Joining Forces

Nicky and Gavin met in the late nineties, whilst working together at the online language school Net Languages. Gavin was Lead Developer for the technical team, whilst Nicky was part of the materials writing team. They gradually discovered a shared interest in teacher development and online courses, and hatched a plot to start their own company

    2. First Online Course

In January of 2003 they ran their first online e-Moderation course to test the waters. Much of this course was based on Nicky's previous work on an online MA for Latin America. The course was a resounding success.

    3. Company Formed

The Consultants-E was officially formed in April of 2003 - initially with a third partner, who later left to pursue a career in education technology at tertiary level in the UK. The company initially started with one course.

    4. Consultancy Beginnings

With more educational institutions moving into blended and online learning, The Consultants-E were soon in demand as consultants, helping others to convert their courses to blended and online delivery modes.

    5. New Courses

With more demand came more courses. The company developed its first course in using EdTech in the classroom, and a variety of shorter courses looking at key EdTech approaches in the Web 2.0 era.

    6. Awards & Certificates

With their key EdTech course winning a prestigious British Council ELTons award in 2007, The Consultants-E went on to further develop the course, turning it into the CertICT, a full qualification validated by Trinity College London.

    7. CertiBET

In 2009, The Consultants-E launched the first fully-online CertIBET, jointly managed and validated by Trinity College London and English UK. Written by Nicky and Carl Dowse - and tutored by Carl Dowse - this course has prepared over 200 teachers to enter the world of professional English

    8. New Relationships

This year saw The Consultants-E start work for Laureate Education on an ambitious online global teacher training initiative - a relationship which survives and thrives to this day. Many hundreds of teachers in the Laureate network have trained on this programme.

    2012 - 2018
    The UK Years

    1. NILE

In 2012 The Consultants-E started another long-term relationship - with the Norwich Institute for Language Education (NILE), with Nicky & Gavin working on a suite of online courses for the organisation, and Gavin writing and tutoring on the NILE MA MATALL module (Technology Assisted Language Learning). Another professionally-rewarding long-term relationship.

    2. Moving Countries

With Gavin's return to the UK - and Spain's economy suffering - Nicky & Gavin decided to move the company to the UK and set up there. Day-to-day administration passed from Nicky in Spain, to Gavin in the south-west, and later, in Wales, where the company is now based. This also saw the start of the rebrand to TCE, with a new mobile-friendly website.

    3. More Awards

2013 saw the publication (co-written with Dr. Mark Pegrum of UWA) of 'Digital Literacies', a ground-breaking EdTech book for a new era of communication. The book went on to win the British Council - Society of Authors award in 2014. Initially published by Pearson, this book is now looked after by Routledge.

    4. More Books

In 2015 Nicky & Gavin published 'Going Mobile', part of the DELTA Handbooks for Teachers series. This was the first mLearning book to be published for ELT, and continues to be a best-seller today.

    5. New Courses

With more teachers going freelance, and a blooming business in teaching online via Skype and other video-conferencing platforms, TCE launched a new two-week course 'Teaching Live Online'. To date, over 100 teachers have benefitted from this course in their daily practice.

TCE were also one of the three founding partners of AQUEDUTO - the Association for Quality Education and Training Online.

    6. And More Courses...

Always on-trend, TCE launched 'Teaching One-to-One' a new two-week course aimed at teachers exploring the world of one-to-one teaching, and coaching. The course launched at the same time as a new version the TCE website - a modern, flat design update with improved support, shopping cart and ultra-secure browsing.

    7. Looking Ahead

TCE continue to explore new book opportunities in EdTech, and nurturing long-term relations with organisations such as Laureate, NILE, the British Council and others. Watch out for more books, new courses and innovative EdTech projects coming your way.
