Second Life Initial Training

Second Life: An Introduction for educators 2-week course

"I learned a lot about SL itself, about teaching and teaching tools in SL in a relatively short time. Before this course I had been wandering in educational Sims feeling a little lost and confused. Now I am much more confident and know where to turn to if I have further questions."
Riitta Liski (Finland) - former course participant.

"The volume of input was great, and Gavin was brilliant at helping the newbies like me and keeping the experienced folk provided with input (...) Congrats to the Consultants-E; no question that this was a great course and a great experience."
Pete Sharma (UK) - former course participant.

This set of four 90-minute training sessions carried out entirely in Second Life, on EduNation, is designed to get educators up-to-speed with the basic skills needed to teach and train using Second Life. We also offer more advanced training in teaching environments, tools and approaches in Second Life, as well as teaching builds for colleges and other educational entities - please contact us for further information.

"Brilliant, Gavin made up a session I'd missed with a personal tutorial, meant he was doing a lot of teaching on one night, but nothing was too much trouble for him. He was really clear and patient! (...) energised to try and explore (I'd 'stuck' after just a few days on Second Life, but now know much more about its possibilities and am eager to explore them)."
Goodith White (United Kingdom) - former course participant.

  1. The Environment, You and Your Avatar
This session covers customising the SL environment for speed and optimal performance, designing your in-world persona, learning how to cloth and style your avatar and the basics of movement.

  2. Inventory, Archiving and Objects
In the second session we look at how Inventory is organised in Second Life, examine Archiving possibilities (including snapshots, landmarks, notecards and videoing) and start to work with basic objects and scripts to produce simple, yet effective, teaching tools.

  3. Teaching Tools
The third training session takes a look at teaching and training in Second Life, considering tools and approaches. Participants will be encouraged to explore the potential uses of various in-world gadgets and take them away at the end of the session for further exploration.

  4. Basic Building - Collaborative Work
The final session looks at building and basic scripting, guiding participants towards the construction of their first build in SL. It covers furniture design, texturing, and object manipulation. More than anything, however, it gives participants a chance to experience real-time collaborative work, and guides them towards a deeper understanding of the rich teaching possibilities within SL.

"I would definitely recommend this course to anyone who is planning to teach in SL. In fact this course was recommended to me by someone, who had taken it earlier."
